Drop cash on memories, not more stuff
I used to think that I needed to spend all of my money on something that lasts. A physical item I could use in my kitchen, or hang on my wall. I’d buy a pretty throw pillow or a nifty side table. I’d buy a kitchen appliance or a yard toy. While I think there is a lot of value in making your home comfortable and welcoming, I’m realizing that there is a balance. Once you have a certain amount of stuff...you don’t need any more. Your kid can play with that same sprinkler or toy for months and even years. You can enjoy that painting forever. You don’t need more stuff or new stuff, get something that lasts and move on.
Two years ago, my family and friends pitched in and got Cash and I season tickets to Universal Studios for Christmas and our birthdays (which all occur in the same week). Was it expensive? Oh, yes. Was it worth it? Absolutely. Even though those tickets have expired now, I don’t regret having had them even a little.
The memories, the life experiences, the endless stories and friends we’ve made have been priceless. The quality time I spent with my son (and other family and friends that came to visit) at one of the most magical places on earth will literally last forever.
What is something you can save for (or even purchase) today that will give you those experiences? Is there a new restaurant in town you have been dying to try but always thought it’s too expensive? Is there something in your town you can buy season passes for? Maybe there is a place you’ve always wanted to visit outside of your town that always feels a little out of reach. I encourage you to start small and then work your way up. Go play mini golf, see a movie, eat out at that cool restaurant, take your kids to that museum. We have decided to invest in Disney season passes this year, and I cannot wait to go on hundreds of new adventures with my boy. Remember, those toys will break eventually, but the experience and quality time you spend with your loved ones will last.
